Mashale Phumaphi

Mashale Phumaphi is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Etavi Renewables. He leads the company’s development of solar, storage and wind opportunities for Southern Africa, bringing together engineering, energy markets and project finance.

He is spearheading the 100 MW Tati Solar Plant in Botswana, which is now in construction. Developed with international partners, the project will supply electricity through the Southern African Power Pool. Alongside Tati, he is developing a pipeline of independent power producer projects to supply renewable energy across Southern Africa.

A Botswana-based engineer turned financier, Mashale founded Shumba Energy in 2011 and served as its Managing Director. The company advanced one of the country’s largest energy resource positions and listed on the Botswana and Mauritius exchanges.

Earlier in his career, he worked in London with Loeb Aron & Co. as a Corporate Finance Executive, raising substantial capital for African natural resources projects. He began his career as an engineer at Debswana’s Jwaneng Mine and holds a Master of Engineering degree with first-class honours from the University of Sheffield.

Recognised in Miningmx’s “Rainmakers & Potstirrers 2021” as one of Africa’s 100 most influential mining industry figures, Mashale champions a pragmatic energy transition that balances Africa’s developmental needs with sustainable growth.
